:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from E. Gold -- Fascinating story of how kindness can change fear : Just finished reading my copy of "The Kindness of Color: The Story of Two Families and Mendez, et al. v. Westminster, the 1947 Desegregation of California Public Schools". More than a story about the Orange County desegregation of pubic schools, it also covers the incarceration of Japanese Americans in the USA during WW II. We read about people not being allowed to go to the school in their neighborhood because of the color of their skin; people incarcerated in internment camps for three years with no hope or understanding of what will happen to them, due to fear - because they looked like the "enemy" during war time. Janice covers this and more in a very easy to read book, filled with information, but also filled with hope. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )

I was amazed to find this happened so close to where I live, and yet I had never heard of it! Thank you, Janice for making an important piece of history available to us. She skillfully weaves in the kindness of color of a Hispanic family, a White Banker, and a Jewish lawyer who was the son of Russian immigrants, as well as her own family. A must read for those who are genuinely interested in breaking past the color barriers of our society to authentically see the goodness and kindness in the people around us. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from LM -- facinating history : The author walks you though a very detailed account of what happened during the time just before and after the Japanese internment from the personal perspective of her family. She goes into detail about making sure the reader understands the terms she is using as well as other ideas brought up in the book. A quick read, this was well worth the time for me, a 40 something year old California native (and American!) to learn about this dark time in our recent history not only in our country but in our state. BUT also see it in a light of a community that made the best of the situation. I wasn't taught this is school (as she points out in the book). ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )

Mendez v Westminster 1947, Desegregation of California public schools, the very early beginnings. Janice's family history in Orange county is not to be missed. It is both a history and a blueprint of how we should all live our lives. I am ordering at least eight more books { eight grandchildren }. The story captured in this book is a perfect example of how people can triumph over adversity. Racism has always been a part of American history, but is not a topic that is discussed.
